We recently shared a review of Palfish Official Kids Course. As we mentioned in that blog Palfish is an online teaching platform where you can set up a profile and begin teaching and earning money from the comfort of your own home (or on the road in our case).
As we mentioned in a previous blog “Palfish Official Kids Course Review”, we had been traveling for a few months when we began to look into ways of earning income while traveling. We were in the process of completing our online TEFL course in preparation for moving to Thailand to become teachers.
Palfish has two options for teachers. The first is the Official Kids Course where you teach children from the ages of 3-12 years old English using Palfish’s very own lessons. The second is freetalk which can be used by students of all ages. Freetalk is a service that connects students with teachers. The students will call you as a teacher for a phone call or video call. Most of the students using this service are just looking to practice their conversation skills some might ask for you to teach them a particular topic such as grammar. Freetalk is a great feature as it allows you to earn income without any teaching certificates.

Palfish Hiring Process
To work as a Palfish Freetalk teacher there is no interview process. All you have to do is download the app and fill out your profile information. You will first need to upload a profile picture (clear selfie).
Next you will be required to fill out your self introduction. Your self-introduction must be at least 100 words long and include your name, nationality, education, and what you can offer your students. We also recommend including information about your hobbies and interests. Sometimes students prefer to speak to teachers with similar interests eg. travel, food, science, sport, music etc.
Once you have completed your self-introduction you will then need to voice record a self introduction. Your voice recording must be longer that 30 seconds. The purpose of this is to showcase your speaking, pronunciation, and accent. Your voice recording should include information similar to what is in your written self-introduction.
Finally you will need to go to ‘My Wallet’ and fill out your payment information. Palfish pay into Payonner or Chinese bank account only.
How do Classes with Palfish Work?
The great thing about working as a teacher on Palfish is that it is completely flexible. Open your schedule at times that suit you. There is no minimum or maximum lesson duration. Freetalk lessons can be conducted via voice call or video call.
There are no set lesson plans, you simply tailor the lessons to your students needs. Most students who use the Palfish feature just want to practice their general conversation. It really is as easy as building a relationship and chatting about things like work/education, interests, travel, current affairs etc.
What is the Work Schedule Like?
All classes operate on Beijing time. As we live in Thailand it works out well for us as we are only one hour behind. The great thing about Palfish is that you can open your schedule to suit you.
Classes are daily and start at 8am and the last class is at 11:30pm (Beijing time). It is up to you what times you make yourself available for.
With free talk you can also go online by clicking ‘Start Tutoring’ when you are available to accept calls. Simply click ‘Stop Tutoring’ when you are no longer available.
What’s the Pay Like at Palfish?
Teachers on Palfish Freetalk choose their own pay rates. You are paid by the minute for how long your call lasts for. You can set your price as low as 0.5Yuan per minute and up to 5Yuan per minute. On average teachers typically charge 1.5 – 2.5yuan per minute.
Teachers also have the option to set a price for trial classes. The first free talk lesson a student has with you is their trial class and you can offer this at a slightly lower rate as a booking incentive but it is optional.
Unlike the Official Kids Course, Palfish does take a 20% cut of your freetalk earnings so bear this in mind when you are setting your rate.
Summary of Palfish Review
If you are looking for a casual online teaching position Palfish Freetalk is perfect. It is a great way to make additional income. Working as a Freetalk teacher on Palfish is a great source of income while traveling too. It requires minimum effort and zero props.
