Teaching English online is gaining in popularity, particularly since the Covid-19 pandemic. Lots of children are looking to online platforms to continue their studies as schools remain closed. We want to share our personal experience teaching on Palfish.
We had been traveling for a few months when we began to look into ways of earning income on the road. We were currently in the process of completing our 120 hour online TEFL course. At this stage we had already decided that we wanted to make our way towards South East Asia to work as teachers.

When we came across Palfish we thought it was ideal. We would soon be finished with our TEFL course plus teaching online will provide us with some experience before moving to South East Asia.
We have currently been teaching on Palfish for 6months now. Since moving to Thailand we had to wait 2 months before we started our jobs at a local international school. During these 2 months we worked as online teachers earning a pretty decent income.
Palfish has two options for teachers. The first is the Official Kids Course where you teach children from the ages of 3-12 years old English using Palfish’s very own lessons. The second is freetalk which can be used by students of all ages. Freetalk is a service that connects students with teachers. The students will call you as a teacher for a phone call or video call. Most students using this service are just looking to practice their conversation skills some might ask for you to teach them a particular topic such as grammar.
In this blog we are going to focus on Palfish Official Kids Course. We will cover Palfish Freetalk in a separate blog.
Palfish Hiring Process
The hiring process for Palfish was very quick and straight forward. To apply to be an Official Kids Course teacher you will require a bachelor’s degree, TEFL certificate or equivalent and be a native English speaker.
We did not have to attend an interview. We firstly sent copies of our degree and TEFL cert along with a copy of our passport as proof of ID. Once we sent the relevant information and filled out our profile we then scheduled a demo lesson.
The demo lesson was 25 minutes long. There was no student at the other end. We basically gave the lesson as if there was student there. It took about 48 hours for our profile to be approved after the demo lesson and then we were the good to go.
How do Classes with Palfish Work?
All Official Kids Course classes on Palfish are 25 minutes long and you will only ever be teaching one child at a time. Palfish provide you with the lesson and interactive slides so you are not required to create your own lesson plans.
To teach a lesson you will require a good tablet or phone, decent wifi speed and we like to use some props like flashcards and a small whiteboard.
What is the Work Schedule Like?
All classes operate on Beijing time. As we live in Thailand it works out well as we are only one hour behind. The great thing about Palfish is that you can open your schedule to suit you.
Classes are daily and start at 8am and the last class is at 11:30pm (Beijing time). It is up to you what times you make yourself available for.
What’s the Pay Like at Palfish?
Payment for a 25 minute lesson start at 55yuan (around $7.70). Total money earned is withdrawn from your Palfish account on the last day of each month.
Your total monthly balance will be transferred into your back account or Paynoner account before the 7th of each month. We have always received our payments on time.
